We seem to be throwing out more things than ever before, and if you are like many of us, when we do, we can feel kind of terrible. Surely there must be other uses for all of this junk that we throw in the rubbish every day? Even cleaning out the coffee grounds feels pointless when we just dump them in the bin. If you agree, did you know that almost every single thing that we consider to be useless can actually have a huge variety of other uses? That means that you will not only be saving money, but you’ll also feel like you’re doing your bit for the environment by not adding to all that landfill.
We are here to show you that cleaning up your coffee grounds is not a case of putting that mess in the bin, but can really be the beginning of a brilliant new routine. Knowing what to do with coffee grounds can totally transform the way that your entire house runs. Don’t believe us? Read on to find out some great tips and hints, and discover that you have been throwing away gold dust all this time:
We’ve all had that sinking feeling; that moment when we look down, and realise that once again, we have ants in the house. Just like other pests such as slugs and snails, ants can be almost impossible to get rid of, and when you have pets or small children, putting down pesticides is not really an option. However, this is a great chance to do something with your coffee grounds. Just putting them around a pet’s bowl, or by the crack in your wall where the ants are coming in, will very quickly do the trick. Ants hate the very strong smell of coffee grounds, and if your curious little rug rats accidently put them in their mouth, the grounds won’t harm your children or your pets.
If you are cleaning up the aftermath of your daily coffee fix on a regular basis, then you will probably have tons of coffee grounds left over – which is great news for your plants! Many fertilisers are full of synthetic chemicals which can damage your plants over time and be harmful to humans. Coffee grounds on the other hand are packed full of totally natural chemicals that your plants will love, as well as giving your soil a wonderful aroma that you will almost certainly be able to notice if the wind is right!
Cupboards always seem to accumulate a whole load of really strange smells, and half the time we can’t even work out where that disturbing odour came from in the first place. If you are constantly cleaning out your cupboards and using air fresheners trying to keep everything smelling nice, here is a great idea. Once your coffee grounds have completely dried out, stuff them in an old pair of tights, right to the toe, and tie it off with an elastic band. Now all you need to do is hang them up in your cupboards and the coffee grounds will naturally absorb all of the horrendous smells! You may even like to try adding a few drops of vanilla just to add a very subtle, pleasant aroma.
This is a tip that has been used for years, but for some reason it’s not that well known. If you want a really easy and simple idea of what to do with coffee grounds after you have drunk that delicious cup of coffee, give this a try: use them in your washing up! Some of the naturally occurring chemicals that can be found in coffee grounds are really good at breaking down stubborn grease stains on crockery and cooking ware, which means coffee grounds are really great at shifting the dirt from your plates. Whether wet or dry, you can use them to clean heavily soiled pots and pans by tossing them onto the affected area and scrubbing with a sponge.
Amazed yet? We were astonished when we realised just how useful used coffee grounds could be, and now can’t imagine throwing them away the next time a pot of coffee is brewed. And these are just a few of the great ways that coffee grounds can be given a whole new lease of life. Cleaning up that coffee mess is now something that you can actually look forward to!
