Whether you’re looking for a career change or looking for job you can jump into without a lengthy reskilling process, there’s plenty of roles out there where they will train you on the job.

We’ve put together a list of five jobs where training is provided so you can make the shift to a new career.

Call Center Customer Service

Helping people is at the heart of this role. You’ll need to be comfortable talking to people and empathising with them. Utilising problem-solving skills and thinking on your feet, you’ll spend a lot of time on the phone in this role. But the good news is most companies provide comprehensive on-going training for their customer service staff. Each company will have a unique approach that they want you to follow incorporating their values and customer care tactics into the process.

How long is the training?

Training for customer service and call center roles tends to be an ongoing process, you might start the role and have training for several days then be monitored and supported by a team leader for several months.

Requirements and Expectations

Call center and customer service roles suit people who are personable, with a good phone manner and great organisational skills. Most of these types of roles have Key Performance Indicators or KPIs that you’ll need to meet. This could be the number of calls you take, or a customer satisfaction measurement or a sales-focused metric like customers saved or product upgrades sold.

Domestic Cleaner

Domestic cleaners, also known as house cleaners or sometimes housekeepers can get into the role with no experience and all the training is provided. Most of us have already done this kind of work in our everyday lives, the role includes things like tidying, dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, doing the washing, vacuuming or mopping the floors, all the general house cleaning we have done in our own homes. It’s a rewarding career where you get to help families, and busy couples enjoy their homes and find more time for themselves. And it’s very satisfying to start at one side, work until the whole space is clean.

How long is the training?

At Absolute Domestics our house cleaners come in and train for a one-day workshop and after that they have access to all the information on specific cleaning techniques and best practice in our company manual, so they can check on a technique anytime they need to.

Requirements and Expectations

To work as a domestic cleaner, you need to have your own transport, unless you live in a city center and the public transport is well set up. All the cleaning supplies are sorted out by your clients, you’ll use their products and equipment in their homes.  You’ll need an ABN as you’ll be working as a cleaning contractor, but this also means you’ll get to pick your own hours and work where you want to.

Factory work

Working in a factory is fast-paced experience. You’ll get training as each company will have very specific policies and procedures you need to follow and intensive safety requirements you have to meet for each and every shift. There are many roles you can complete in a factory, from working on an assembly line to picking and packing to logistics. To excel in a role like this you’ll need to be driven and able to cope with some monotony.

How long is the training?

The training for factory roles can be several days or weeks depending on the role you are going to be employed in. It can even involve completing certifications. There is often an onboarding process involving a work health and safety representative that will explain how you can keep yourself and your colleagues safe at work.

Requirements and Expectations

Factory work is all about maintaining a minimum standard across all products. You’ll need to complete the tasks to the same level each time. You’ll be required to maintain a standard of workplace health and safety, including using correct safety equipment and following all procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.

Data Entry

Data entry is a field many people jump into without any experience and most companies offer training on the job.  It is a role where you will be typing and staring at a screen for long periods without a break.

How long is the training?

Training for data entry roles changes from company to company but most places will take a few days to go through their systems and explain where you need to be entering the data and what processes you need to follow to log your work.

Requirements and Expectations

To excel in a role like this you’ll need to be a fast typist, able to get through a high volume of data with little to no errors in your copy. Most data entry roles have KPIs based on the volume of work you can get through and the percentage of errors in your data.

Administration assistant

Working as an administration assistant is perfect role for the list makers and calendar keepers. Those with exceptional organisational skills thrive in a role like this. Most companies will hire administration assistants without experience and offer on the job training.

How long is the training?

Depending on the company you work for and what tasks they assign, training could be a couple of days or a couple of weeks. Administration assistants can be tasked with everything from answering phone call enquiries to manning the front desk of the business, to drafting and responding to email correspondence to sending invoices. It just depends on the company you’re working for and their requirements.

Requirements and Expectations

Administration assistants need to be personable and friendly, they often have some interaction with the general public as a part of the business. It’s role where you have to spend a lot of time helping other people in the business and jumping in to assist wherever is necessary. There are less likely to be specific KPIs for administration assistants but your paperwork, inboxes and to do lists will need to get done each week.
