Being a mum is a full-time job. You’re an uber driver, a chef, a personal assistant, a cleaner, a housekeeper, a tutor, seamstress and personal shopper to name just a few of the roles mum performs.

It can be tough to entertain the thought of finding part-time work on top of all of this especially when flexibility and locality will be key to balancing your family commitments with your work. But with the cost-of-living pressures facing us it’s a thought many of us are having to entertain.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of opportunities that can give you the flexibility you need. We’ve put together a list of five flexible jobs mums can do in school hours.

Virtual Assistant

Becoming a virtual assistant is perfect for those mums who have office experience. Virtual assistants or VAs complete all kinds of administration tasks for their clients, this can include managing their inbox and emails, or updating their website, managing their appointments and calendars or managing their social media engagement or scheduling.

How does it work?

Virtual assistants are sole traders who invoice their clients for the hours completed, it is usually done completely from home, virtually. There are perks to this, it means you can choose your own hours and work when you want to. But the downsides are you’ll need to build up your client base, invest in your own advertising and website to get your business off the ground.

Home Daycare Operator

If you love that mum life and you’d like to find a way to make some more money and be in your own home and be able to look after your kids whenever needed, then becoming a home daycare operator might be the perfect option for you.

How does it work?

To become a home daycare operator, you’ll need to complete a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. Beyond that each state and territory have their own rules and regulations around getting provider and service approval often including blue cards, police checks and first aid certifications. Once you’ve gone through those processes you can begin building your business.

Domestic Cleaner

Domestic cleaners, also called house cleaners and housekeepers, are cleaners who come to people’s homes and do the cleaning tasks people are struggling to get to. Often, they are employed by their clients for a long time and do the same tasks each week, this might be cleaning the bathrooms, doing the washing and ironing or mopping the floors. Cleaners generally work daytime office hours, this way their clients come home to a fresh, clean house.
