Of all the rooms we put off deep cleaning and spring cleaning, the bathroom tops the list. But putting off our bathroom deep cleaning could be detrimental to our health. Bathrooms can be a breeding ground for mold and germs and while most households clean their bathroom regularly, bathrooms can become cluttered. It can be easy to forget to throw out that almost empty shampoo bottle or that rusty old razor that is lurking beneath the sink.

But don’t panic, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on how to declutter and spring clean your bathroom.

First things first.

Go Through Everything

Grab yourself a plastic tub and put all bathroom products in it, clear out your shower, your vanity, and everything under your sink. Then go through each product and check;

  • Expiry or best before dates, don’t hang onto anything that’s out of date.
  • How much product is left? Toss out the empties.
  • Do a stocktake and note which products you have multiples of, then decide which products you’ll keep.
  • Go through your hand towels and bath towels, and consider which ones need to be retired to cleaning towels.
  • Check your toothbrush, consider if the bristles are looking worn and how long you’ve had it. If you can’t remember when you bought it, it might be time to get a new toothbrush.
  • Once you have sorted what’s staying, what’s being used up and what is going in the bin put it all aside to leave yourself a clear space for cleaning. Pop your bath towels and bath mats in the wash, we want to work with a completely clear space.

Work From the Top Down

Scrub the ceilings and walls first, any dust or dirt that escapes can be caught in the final vacuum and mop. Don’t forget to get in those exhaust fans.

Exhaust fans often end up clogged with dust bunnies and forgotten until the big clean roll around. You can often remove the exhaust fan grate or panel and vacuum the excess dust or if you can’t remove the panel use a wooden skewer to clean between each grate.

Light Fixtures and Light Switches

Removing fixtures and getting those bugs that have managed to crawl up inside the light fittings can really change the mood in the room. If you’re unsure how to remove your light fixtures, google it and follow professional advice.

Dry Dusting

Wherever you encounter dust, use a dry cloth first before introducing a damp cloth or scrubbing brush. If you introduce water where dust is present, you’ll only make the mess worse by creating dirty streaks.

Use The Right Tools

Stiff bristle scrubbing brushes can get between the tiles for a more effective bathroom clean. Silicone floor scrappers and window squeegees might seem like an investment, but a professional cleaner knows that certain tools are essential to do the job right.

Deep Clean the Drains

Both the shower and the sink drain need regular a deep cleaning, hair and gunk can get trapped in them.  Get the drain snake out and try to clear it.

Clean then Disinfect

Clean first then disinfect the area. Cleaning the physical dirt and grime from the bathroom first ensures that when you go over everything with disinfectant its actually going on a clean surface. There isn’t much good in disinfecting a surface that still has grime, streaks or marks on it.

Scrubbing the Bath

Before you begin scrubbing the bathtub, make ensure to rinse away any residual dirt, hair, or dust from the tub. Once this step is complete, go in with your bathroom cleaner and generously coat the bathtub, sprinkle bicarb soda onto the mixture and you’ll get a cleaning paste that can cut through most soap scum. Then get in there with a scrubbing brush and some hot water to remove any stains.

Under the Sink

When you clear out the products under the sink it’s often a little scary, there can be sticky substances that you don’t recognise, stains from products long thrown out, rusty razor heads you discarded and then forgot about. That’s why it’s important to scrub the shelves and wipe down the walls inside your cabinets. To prevent damage to the cabinets you should dry the walls and shelves after you’ve cleaned them with a towel.

Don’t Forget the Light Switches And Door Handles

There’s nothing more annoying than finishing a full deep clean of the bathroom to suddenly notice that there are small splatters of toothpaste or hair products on the door or walls. Take an extra few minutes to check and wipe down your light switches, mirrors, and both sides of the bathroom door, and spot-clean the walls anywhere you notice little marks.
